Red She Hulk & Green She Hulk

Red She-Hulk (Betty Ross)

Betty Ross is a key figure in Marvel Comics, primarily known as Bruce Banner’s (the Hulk) love interest and the daughter of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Over time, Betty’s character evolved dramatically, leading to her transformation into the Red She-Hulk. Her transformation happened after her father, who had become the Red Hulk, worked with the villain MODOK and subjected Betty to a similar procedure that turned her into the Red She-Hulk.

As Red She-Hulk, Betty possesses incredible strength, durability, and regenerative abilities, similar to the Hulk family. However, unlike Bruce or Jennifer Walters, Betty’s transformation is more aggressive and often leads to a more violent personality. She can increase her size and power when enraged and has access to abilities like energy absorption. While her transformation has made her a powerful ally and enemy, it also has caused emotional turmoil, especially in her relationship with Bruce.

Throughout her time as Red She-Hulk, Betty has walked a fine line between hero and anti-hero, often acting in ways that challenge traditional heroic values. Her complex character, rooted in her long history in the Hulk storyline, makes her an unpredictable force in the Marvel universe.

Green She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters)

Jennifer Walters, also known as She-Hulk, is the cousin of Bruce Banner (the Hulk). A brilliant lawyer, Jennifer’s life changed forever after a blood transfusion from Bruce in an emergency, which gave her the ability to transform into the She-Hulk. Unlike Bruce’s Hulk, Jennifer’s transformation leaves her with her full intelligence and personality, allowing her to balance her normal life with her superhero persona.

She-Hulk is known for her incredible strength, endurance, and ability to heal rapidly. However, what sets her apart from other Hulk characters is her strong sense of justice and her wit. Jennifer often uses her legal skills to fight for justice in the courtroom and her superpowers to battle villains outside of it.

She-Hulk is a character who embraces her powers, and she often prefers staying in her Hulk form. Her storylines frequently blend humour, action, and social commentary, making her one of the more relatable and entertaining Marvel superheroes. Whether fighting alongside the Avengers or defending clients as a lawyer, Jennifer Walters represents both brains and brawn in the Marvel universe.

Emma Frost & Jean Grey

Emma Frost & Jean Grey

Inspired by Giant Size X-Men, Issue1 2020 cover. Illustrated by Russell Dauterman and written by Jonathan Hickman.

Giant size X-Men follows the events of a team up with Jean Grey and Emma Frost travelling into the mind of a recently machine virus infected Storm.

They have 30 days to solve the problem before Storm is completely taken over. The two mutants go into the mind of Storm trying to find out whats wrong with with her and after fighting there way through Storms defences finally discover something terrible…a techno virus!

The issue is fantastic and has a particular throwback silent scene with lots of nods to Grant Morrisson’s 2001 X-Men run that longtime fans will recognise straight away.

Jean Grey – 2018 X-Men Red

Inspired by the awesome X-Men Red run illustrated by Mahmud. A. Asrar and written by Tom Taylor. This was following the events of the 2017 mini series ‘Phoenix Resurrection – The Return of Jean Grey’.

Jean has recently been resurrected after being dead for over a decade. She assembles a new team with the intention of creating a mutant nation with full human rights.

The team consisting of Nightcrawler, Honey Badger, Gentle, Trinery and Namor are forced to act in secret. Jean is framed for the murder of a congresswoman who is psychically murdered by the resurfaced Cassandra Nova.

Cullen Bloodstone

Bloodstone (Cullen) – Avengers Arena

Bloodstone aka Cullen Bloodstone is not a character that I would usually think of making. As it turns out, I was recently included in the Fwoosh Secret Santa 2021 challenge, involving a number of customisers. Being part of this challenge allowed me to pick between a number of well known, and not so well known Marvel characters and this was the end result.

When researching the character I thought it would be most fitting to show the character in both forms. Firstly as himself and secondly as a partially transformed representation of the character.

The above picture shows Cullen as himself. I wanted to ensure that the character was easily recognisable, but also could feature a change. I thought the best way to do this would be to build a back stand. This would hopefully showcase the character in transformation.

As I have seen customised versions of the transformation completed and very few in progress, I chose to stick to a partial transformation. I went further to include both his unchanged head (As above), and also a partially transformed head (As below), to show the transformation from humanoid to a possessed form, Glartrox.

This one was a real challenge for me. Coupled with that, the fact that I knew it would be posted on one of the best review sites and communities on the internet. I am fairly happy with the result. And although this one took a lot longer with having the transformative stand, it was a very enjoyable project.

She-Hulk

She-Hulk Fantastic Four

Finally, I got around to finishing these two She Hulk’s.

I decided to make two variations of her costume. The first one inspired from when she temporarily replaced The Thing as a member Fantastic Four.

The other, and probably one of her more recognisable costumes being the purple and white, in which she wore variations throughout her solo and Avengers comic runs.

Jen Walters is quite an interesting character, a lawyer by day and a crime fighting super heroin, “well” by day! She is also the cousin of, yes you guessed right, the Incredible Hulk Bruce Banner himself!

After an emergency blood transfusion by the aforementioned Bruce, she originally acquired a somewhat milder version of his Hulk abilities. However unlike The Hulk, she was able to retain her personality and intelligence. In recent years She-Hulk has had a bit of a power upgrade and gone full HulkSmash like her cousin!

The character first appeared in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. She-Hulk was created by Stan Lee and artist John Buascema. She is one of the few Marvel characters that has often broken the fourth wall, talking directly to the reader. She-Hulk had her own series ‘Savage She-Hulk’ that lasted until around 1982. She then went on to join the Avengers.

Her appearances in Avengers were drawn by John Bryne who later created her solo series ‘The Sensational She-Hulk’ .

This ran for 60 issues which was actually the longest running title of any Marvel superheroin, up to that point. After a few more successful solo runs by Dan Slott, Juan Bobillo and later Peter David, She-Hulk continued to pop up in animated cartoons, before once again rejoining The Avengers. She currently resides in Mighty Avengers as a more Bulked up Hulk version, similar to her cousin.

But wait, there’s more!

She-Hulk is finally after all these years going to be starring in her very own live action tv series.

This is scheduled for release on Disney+ in 2022, as part of Marvel phase 4 starring Tatiana Maslany, who starred in the amazing TV series Orphan Black.

The Ultimates

The Ultimates

Al Ewing’s 2015 The Ultimates not to be confused with Mark Millers 2006 1610 universe run from the 1610 universe that inspired the later marvel cinematic movies. The Ultimates is a two volume collection that comes straight after the 2015 massive cosmic event Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman. The first was part of All-New, All-Different Marvel and the second as part of Marvel NOW!. Both volumes have the same team and their goal is to protect Earth and the larger universe from cosmic threats.

BLACK PANTHER! CAPTAIN MARVEL! MS. AMERICA CHAVEZ! SPECTRUM! BLUE MARVEL! The ultimate superteam comes together to find and fix problems beyond the limits of the infinite! From cosmic forces lurking on Earth to what waits on the outside of the omniverse – the impossible is where they start! And what’s more impossible than ending the threat of Galactus, the devourer of worlds… forever?

The first mission the The Ultimates were sent on was to involve the threat of Galactus (1st appearance fantastic four #45-#50) and his world devouring hunger. The team confronted Galactus with help of Neutronium and Galactus is forced into his own incubator by the Ultimates, who are determined to end his threat. Galactus re-emerges as a Lifebringer instead of a Devourer of Worlds, his first act being to restore Archeopia, the first planet that he ever consumed.

The team went on to various adventures in exo space and encountered Blue Marvels old enemy Anti-man. During 2016 civil war 2 event the team with Giant mans Pym particles, then assist The Guardians of the Galaxy and Alpha Flight in Secret Empire 2017 event before ultimately (see what i did there?) having a final encounter with The High Evolutionary which cleverly circles back around to Mark Millers original Ultimates run. all in all the Ultimates is a very interesting series that has lots of mind bending Metaphysics, science head trips that get even more vast as the series goes on! The art by Kenneth Rocafort is visually stunning and it compliments the cosmic elements perfectly. That and great story telling was the reasons behind why i was inspired to make the team.

Moving forward here’s whats going on with facecustoms in 2021.

Face Customs Plans in 2021

Wow what a rubbish year it has been. The borders were closed, my holiday was cancelled, and post has not really been moving anywhere. As a result many of you have been waiting, very patiently I might add, for your commissions to arrive.

As you can imagine, it isn’t just the work I have been doing that has struggled to get out, but also materials in. I can not tell you how hard it was to get some flesh coloured paint about a month ago, from my normal supplier.

I will not be taking new commissions on for 2021 once I’m through the delayed commissions from 2020

However, I shall be working on some other projects later in the year of my own. I’ll be visiting characters /figures that I have always wanted to make, but never had a chance. I may visit some of the characters I’ve made before. Obviously this will be an updated version as I still prefer them to be OOAK.

Revisits

As a lot of you know, I get asked often for figures that have already been sold. What I would like to do is, whilst keeping each figure individual in its nature, actually offer a couple of variations of each figure I make. This means that whilst accepting commissions won’t be possible at the moment, my work will be available to purchase as individual pieces still. This will also allow me more time to work and progress in my love for this art.

My work will be visible on my current listing page on my website and on good old ebay. These will be predominantly as Buy it Now listings. That way by setting a price that warrants the effort and time put into the work, no one will be outbid and a fair price will be paid.

Age of Apocalypse Rogue

The inspiration behind Rogue

I’ve always loved the Age of Apocalypse redesigns. And this take on Rogue was quite a departure from the Jim Lee design, that I had grown to love. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t mind change now that I’m grown up and a fully functioning member of adult society. But trying to explain change to a younger teenage me was like trying to convince me to jump out of a plane without a parachute! No seriously I was, and still am that dramatic! Now I’m not going to do the usual write up character synopsis, and how to. Instead I am going to tell you my story.

My Story

I remember at the time I knew the event was coming up and I had seen the cool looking previews of the new X-men Alpha X-Calibur on the back of the previous comics and I’ll be honest I was nervous! I mean they looked like the characters I had invested so much of my youth in, but what’s going to happen? Will I like them? These were really big questions to my younger self and as the event was running for a whole year this quite simply could have ruined the whole of 1995 to 96, I mean a whole year! Was my 13 year old self really prepared for the kind of change that was about to happen to my beloved X-Men universe! So one morning I excitedly got up and plonked my slightly awkward arms longer than legs, weird prepubescent body on my bike and cycled to the nearest comic book store. On arrival I threw my bike down outside as I hurried in and there, there it was, X-men Alpha #1 …and it was in a foil cover. Eeeeeeeeee! Shining under the shop strip lights, the same shop strip lights that my older self would come to avoid, like a vampire avoids daylight! And in all its glory! I opened the page and Boom, everything changed! Gone were all the Jim Lee costumes! The shoulder pads were replaced with even bigger ones! No more big hair, replaced by even bigger hair! And gone were all the backstories I had invested all that time in. …..my world had changed, like the X-men forever.

Heading home

So after paying for my new shiny purchase I hurriedly cycled back with all the what if scenarios running through my brain. On arrival I threw my bike in the garden, well actually placed, as it was a weekend and did not want to face the wrath of Parental units. They would make me do chores or even worse take the dog out if I was to awaken them from there slumber!

I tiptoed upstairs to my room which I shared with one of my brothers Craig, who was at the time engrossed in his own very intense battle on the Megadrive involving Liu Kang triple kicking Shang Tsung into the stabby pits of hell of Mortal Kombat.

My one last obstacle was to climb over Craig who was furiously bashing the codes into the Megadrive controller for the perfect fatality! This was a crucial point in every teenagers life so if I was to ruin this for him it would have involved many nights of me whispering down through the slats of the top bunk trade deals from my chosen list of owned items just to bring peace and harmony back to our shared room. Finally I made my way to the top bunk with the agility of one of the cirque du soleil performers ahhhh I had made it! Now let’s have a look!

First impressions

So as I flicked through the pages trying to take in these new but familiar characters and their crazy apocalyptic world, I began to realise that all my fears had come true! oh no! It was different! Really different! So different in fact that I closed the comic and sat staring at the ceiling in a kind of weird catatonic glaze huh? What was that I thought? Did I just cycle through some weird dimensional portal on the way to the shop?

As I sat there with my mind trying to take it all in, I kept going back and forth through the pages again to stare at all the art. That’s it, I thought I have to speak to someone but it was Saturday and the usual comic book kid I would have long debates in the school library about who was more powerful Thor or The Hulk lived too far away. This was the era before mobile phones so I had only one option, Craig aka The Craigster!

Perfect Timing

Now this had to be done absolutely perfectly! Timing was crucial. One slightly over estimated move might cause him to lose the game, and I would have to go through days, even weeks of the aforementioned trade negotiations.

So I waited, and waited! ……and waited! Just as I was about to give up and go out there was a loud frustrating noooooooooo! Yes, I thought. Crap! Did I say that out loud? I mean noooooo!

The time was now. I had to go for it before the next game was loaded. I threw the X-Men Alpha down to him and said, what do you think of this?

As I watched him look through the pages, I looked intently for any sign of disdain, but nothing! No horrified gasp, nothing?

“Well, what do you think?” I said.

Surely he would agree with me. Surely he would throw the comic right out of the window and say Stewart we are going to D.C. Well actually that came later, but that’s whole other story, isn’t it Craig?

“Cool!” I suddenly heard?

“Really? but they have changed everything.” I replied.

“Well, change is good, things can’t always stay the same way forever.”

Epiphany, lightbulb moment.

Huh? Change is good. I repeated to myself slowly! And with that small sentence of calm collective wisdom, my younger brother of two years had completely brought me back down to earth. And with that, he turned around, pressed play and continued his game. Little did i know that this moment would come in quite handy for my own personal Age Of Apocalypse, in the year 2020.

As I stared open mouthed at the back of his head, “He’s right.” I thought. Things won’t and can’t stay the same. So in reality it was me, not Marvel who was trying to destroy my 1995 . It was me and my complete inability to accept anything different than what I already knew.

So I decided to give it another go. With my newly found wisdom, and fresh perspective mantra, I opened the page and started to read… and something strange happened! I actually really started to like this new take on the X-Men! Look, I mean it wasn’t the X-universe I had known but after I got through the first issue and was completely hooked. I needed to know where this was all going to go.

Also side note this would give me a whole year of endless new material to debate with comic book kid at lunch time.

Synopsis

Charles Xavier is dead! Accidently killed in the past during a time travel mission. A brand new world is created in his absence and it is the X-Men’s worst nightmare, welcome to the Age Of Apocalypse!

If you haven’t read the Age Of Apocalypse, then I highly suggest you pick it up, as it’s now a classic must read in the X-Men timeline. I will warn you as it was an event that lasted the whole year there is quite a lot of story to get through but it’s well worth it, you can get it in graphic novel form ‘X-Men Age of Apocalypse Alpha’, ‘Omega’, ‘Raign’ and ‘Dawn’. There have also been a few revisits over the years, one of them being in the pages of the brilliant Rick Remender, ‘Uncanny X-Force’. you can find them at wordery.com, Amazon and Forbidden Planet in the UK, or Amazon, Marvel Unlimited and Marvel.com and all other good local comic book stores in the US.

Black Widow Trailer Released Today

The new Black Widow Official Trailer – Now released by Marvel

Movie after movie, Marvel is really knocking them out at the moment, The group movies pretty much concluded, for now, with The Avengers End Game. As we know (SPOILER ALERT) Black Widow died in End Game by sacrificing herself. As a result the speculation is that this film to be set in line with when Hawkeye said “Just like Budapest all over again” way back in Civil War.

We also know that Budapest and Morocco are filming locations of the latest Black Widow movie. There are some helpful hints in the trailer, but its all guess work for now. We have a pretty long wait too, until May 2020 before we find out what the story line really will be.

I for one will look forward to watching on release day!

Jocasta By Face Customs

Jocasta

Jocasta was built by Ultron in the hope of having a mate. Ultron brainwashed Henry Pym, otherwise known as Ant-Man, into transferring the mind of Janet Van Dyne into Jocasta’s shell.

Wasp (Janet Van Dyne) in Jocasta’s body alerted her team mates. The Avengers who defeated Ultron and reversed the process, left Jocasta a mindless husk. Ultron revived her and she returned to him. Even though she loved him intensely, should could not abide his evil. She eventually betrayed Ultron choosing to help the Avengers defeat her mate again.

Later she joined The Avengers and later still The Initiative.

Why I Made Her?

I actually built Jocasta at the same time as building Machine Man. This was as she was part of the Marvel Zombies story line. I wanted the piece to represent good and evil, with the option of either defending Ultron or defeating him. I achieved this by making the parts removable and fully posable for the two different scenarios.
